The DCCD (dry cleaning, coating and drawing) process eliminates costly parameters in wire drawing, including elimination of acid and conventional wet pre-coating chemicals for H/C and L/C drawing applications up to 0.90% C. An added benefit is the automatic control of lubrication parameters, including pressure, temperature and viscosity.

In operation, all these parameters ‘communicate’ in a sensitive and automatic multi-way interaction, to form a hard and strongly adherent full film, solid weight-adjustable lubricant coat. Full film lubrication achieves frictionless drawing by physical separation of wire-die contact in all drafts, eliminating friction heat. As a result, the DCCD process offers significant down-stream benefits and cost savings in the most demanding drawing applications, including spring wire and ultra-high tensile rope wire, from mechanically descaled bare rod.

Typical applications of the DCCD process are: output of 2.2 ton/ hour with 5.5mm 0.83/0.88%C rod, in a ‘frictionless’ drawing application with die life of 200 tons per die in the first draft and a die wear of 0.1-0.3 micron per ton of wire drawn in the last draft.

Spring wire is drawn from mechanically descaled bare rod, without pre-coating chemicals, at 18 m/s (3,600 ft/min); 5.5mm 0.72%C rod drawn to 2.35mm at 16m/s (3,200 ft/min); 5.5mm 0.84%C rod drawn to 3.25mm at 8.3m/s (1,660ft/min).

Operation is at zero maintenance cost (there are no hot liquid tanks for rod precoating, no hot air blowers to dry wet rod) and at virtually zero energy consumption.

Far superior wire ductility and superior wire surface finish enable inline wire cleaning for plating quality.
